VOLUNTEER EFFORTS RECOGNIZED

Ivan H. Garcia, M.D. was one of  several doctors recognized by Catholic Charities on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the 24th Annual Healthcare Professionals Breakfast for their commitment and volunteer efforts for the patients of the Esperanza Center Healthcare Services Cener.

Dr. Garcia has volunteered at the Esperanza Center for almost two decades. So long, in fact, that staff can’t recall when Dr. Garcia was not treating patients there.  Upon accepting the award, Dr. Garcia graciously thanked the staff members and volunteers who have helped through the years.  He concluded by issuing a challenge to his fellow healthcare professionals to not only make financial contributions, but give of their time helping patients as well. He acknowledged that sometimes giving time is just as if not more important than giving money.

The Esperanza Center is a Catholic Charities-run community center for immigrants in Baltimore City, offering diverse programs to promote family health and unity, social integration, and citizenship. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Baltimore compassionately care for more than 160,000 people and serves over a quarter million meals every year to those who are hungry. Catholic Charities is the leading private provider of human services in Maryland, widely known for creative and compassionate caregiving and for developing programs aimed at self sufficiency.

Serving as Medical Director at OMNI Eye Specialists, Dr. Garcia typically volunteers one Saturday every two to three months at the Esperanza Center. He treats patients in need of eye exams, diabetic retinopathy screenings, glaucoma and cataract screenings, as well as many other medical eye conditions. Patients requiring follow-up care are seen again at Dr. Garcia’s private practice at OMNI Eye Specialists located at several locations across the Baltimore area. Typically, the practice treats several patients a week under a mission program as well as performing one surgery a week. In addition to the Esperanza Center, the team at OMNI Eye Specialists participates in the Mission Cataract and the Mission of Mercy programs.

OMNI Eye Specialists Among First To Offer New Multifocal IOLs To Patients

Baltimore, Maryland – OMNI Eye Specialists is proud to be one of only two ophthalmology practices in the Baltimore area, and among the first in the country to offer a newly FDA-approved intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract patients. The lens is designed to provide patients high-quality near and distance vision in a range of light conditions.

The new lens unique design gives patients superior near vision and reading speed compared to other presbyopia-correcting IOLs, as well as exceptionally high spectacle independence, with nearly 9 out of 10 patients reporting that they never wear glasses after surgery.

Dulaney Eye Institute will be the first specialized eye surgical center in the Baltimore area to use this new lens. In an exclusive arrangement, Ivan H. Garcia, M.D. is proud to be one of the few hand-selected surgeons in the Baltimore area to offer this new technology. “This is an exciting opportunity for patients and physicians,” says Dr. Garcia. “We now have another lens option that may provide high-quality distance and near vision for our cataract patients, and quite possibly reduce or eliminate their need for glasses,” he says.

Other features and benefits of the lens include:

  • High-quality vision for near, far, and intermediate distances, day or night.
  • First and only pupil-independent, non-apodized fully diffractive aspheric lens designed to correct the two highest order aberrations – spherical and chromatic – to give patients back their youthful vision.
  • 95 percent patient satisfaction – the highest of any presbyopia-correcting IOL.

OMNI Eye Specialists is regarded as one of the premier multi-specialty ophthalmology practices in the Baltimore and Washington, DC areas. By offering a full portfolio of refractive options, Dr. Garcia continues to achieve excellent patient outcomes. Dr. Garcia, Medical Director and Founding Member of OMNI Eye Specialists, received his Fellowship training at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, specializing in Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery. Dr. Garcia has been named “Top Doc” by Baltimore Magazine.

About Cataracts
A cataract is a “clouding” of the eye’s natural lens, which results in blurred or defocused vision. According to a recent article published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, more than 20 million adults in the U.S. have developed cataracts making it the number one cause of poor vision in the United States. According to the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with cataracts is expected to increase to over 30 million people by the year 2020.
