OPTOMETRY SHCOOL AFFILIATION: Salus University (PCO)

DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCIES AT SALUS: Shital Mani, OD, FAAO

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: This program stresses advanced diagnostic and management skills in all areas of ocular disease.  The patient population is referred primarily by local optometrists for secondary or tertiary care.  The resident works closely with the Optometric and Medical staff.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Postgraduate level lectures and seminars on topics related to ocular disease will be provided.  The resident will participate in the Salus University Residents Program.  The resident shall attend at least four OMNI sponsored continuing education courses.  The resident will attend a national continuing education conference and attend at least 12 hours of courses.  The resident will have the opportunity to attend special lectures on selected topics weekly.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES: The resident participates in the clinical education of fourth year externs from several colleges of Optometry, by providing weekly lectures/clinical labs, supervising externs and assessing clinical skills.

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES: The residency curriculum outlines a requirement for the resident to either participate in clinical research activities or present a poster at a national continuing education conference.  The resident is also required to produce a publishable paper which can be submitted to a refereed journal.

ON CALL RESPONSIBILITIES: The resident will be required to be on call starting the third month of the residency (September).  The resident will take call for one week each month, including one holiday weekend.  The resident will always have a backup call person that they can call or page at any time to assist in emergency patients, the entire year.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 13 months

REQUIRED NUMBER OF HOURS PER WEEK: 50

STARTING DATE: July 1

ENDING DATE: July 31 of following year

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 1

COMPENSATION LEVEL: $33,000 per year ($35,750 for 13 months)

BENEFITS: Professional liability insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, 2 weeks of leave (sick or vacation), 1 week CE leave $1000 stipend for CE/professional dues.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS APPLY TO OMNI RESIDENCY

1.          The application deadline for the OMNI residency is February 1.  All supporting documents must be received no later then February 15.  The residency program begins July 1.  All information must also be submitted to ORMS matching service by January 31.

2.         Applications will be considered incomplete unless:

a.    All items on the application form are completed as accurately as possible.

b.    The application form is signed and dated.

c.    We have received official copies of all National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) scores completed to date.  Applicants must pass each part of the NBEO to be considered for the residency position.

d.    We are in receipt of official transcripts of all college and professional school grades.

e.    We have received the required three letters of recommendation.

3.          Three letters of recommendation are required from individuals familiar with the applicant’s professional abilities and academic performance.  It is the applicant’s responsibility that these three letters be submitted as soon as possible.  They should be addressed to Dr. Zoe K. Lazarou.

4.          The selection committee for the OMNI Baltimore Residency will invite those candidates who appear best qualified on the basis of credentials submitted for a personal interview.  Clinical competency will be evaluated during the interview process.  The selection committee will submit a list of candidates to ORMS in order of preference to participate in the official Optometric residency match.

5.          All applicants must obtain a Doctor of Optometry degree from a school or college Of Optometry accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric association. Preference for admission will be given to individuals currently in their fourth   professional year of Optometric education.
